Have you ever tried enlarging an image? In most cases, this results in a blurry and unprofessional enlarged image. A user recently asked if we could resize a small image to make it larger without losing quality. Here are some tips for resizing images so they are larger without losing quality.

When images are enlarged, why do they lose quality?

On the web, most images are in the bitmap format. For example, JPEGs and PNGs are all bitmap images. Pixels make up a bitmap image. Pixels can be seen as squares when viewed up close.

Bitmaps are images with pixels mapped to fixed locations on the image.

When resizing an image, most image editing software shrinks or enlarges these pixels. Resizing an image to a smaller size does not result in a noticeable loss of quality. This is mostly due to the smaller pixels.

However, when you enlarge an image, the enlarged pixels are more visible, making the image appear blurry and pixelated. It looks like this:

How Do We Fix It?

It is possible to compensate for enlarged pixels by matching their properties with those of their nearest pixel. Interpolation in this manner is called fractals or simply fractals. Using this technique, an image can be enlarged much more effectively.

Below is a step-by-step guide to using this method.

Option 1: Using Adobe Photoshop’s Perfect Resize

A software program called Perfect Resize allows you to smartly resize images. As well as standalone software, the plugin is also available for Adobe Photoshop.

It costs $50 for the regular version, and $150 for the premium version, which includes Adobe Photoshop plugins. You can try both for 30 days for free. We recommend that you use Perfect Resize if you resize images frequently. Though expensive, this method is the best method for enlarging images.

Perfect Resize is not affiliated with us at all. The product is just something we really like.

Launch Photoshop and open the image file you want to resize. Select Automate » Perfect Resize from the File menu.

The image will be opened in Perfect Size. The Document Size field allows you to either choose a preset or to enter your own size.

To save your changes and apply them to the file in Photoshop, click File » Apply after entering the document size.

The file can now be exported as a web image

That’s it, you’ll see that the resized image looks much better than it did before.

Option 2: Use GIMP, a free image editing program

Comparable to Adobe Photoshop, GIMP is also capable of enlarging images with little loss of quality. Nevertheless, we must warn you that the result won’t be as good as Perfect Resize.

Below are instructions on how to make small images larger in Gimp without sacrificing quality.

Launch Gimp and open the image you wish to resize. You can do so by selecting Image » Scale Image. Choose your desired size. Click on the Scale Image button under the Quality section and choose Sinc (Lanczos3) as Interpolation method.

The image can now be exported for the web. It is similar to the previous example. Using Photoshop’s bicubic resampling, the image on the left has been resized.

Interpolation method used to resize the image on the right is Sinc (Lanczos3). As you can see, there is not much of a difference.
